Changing lives for local residents!

Supporting Local People Into Employment with the Ards and North Down Labour Market Partnership and People 1st Employment Academy Ards and North Down

Across Newtownards, Comber and the wider Ards region, more people are accessing new opportunities through targeted employment support programmes.

Delivered in partnership with Ards and North Down Borough Council, the People 1st Employment Academies are helping individuals build confidence, gain qualifications, and move directly into employment.

These employment programmes are designed to support people at all stages-whether returning to work, changing careers, or starting fresh in a new country.

One recent success story highlights just how powerful this support can be.

Employment academy Ards and North Down…
A Journey That Began With Uncertainty

For Liudmyla, her journey began during maternity leave.

Having recently moved to Northern Ireland, she faced multiple barriers:

  • Limited knowledge of the local job market
  • Lack of confidence in English
  • No experience with CV writing or interviews in the UK

“I didn’t know where to look for a job or how to prepare for interviews.”

Like many people in the Ards and North Down area, she needed guidance, structure, and support.

That’s when she discovered People 1st and the employment academy in Ards and North Down

The Role of Employment Academies in Ards & North Down

People 1st Academies are designed to bridge the gap between unemployment and real job opportunities.

Funded through local council partnerships, these programmes offer:

  • Short, focused training courses
  • Industry-relevant qualifications
  • CV and interview preparation
  • Direct links to local employers

Importantly, they also provide ongoing mentoring and support—something that sets them apart from traditional training routes.

For participants like Liudmyla, this holistic approach is key.

Building Skills and Confidence

From her first session on the employment academy Ards and North Down, Liudmyla began to feel a sense of direction.

Working closely with her tutor, she developed essential employability skills that many people take for granted.

“The course helped me restructure my CV and understand that proper preparation is essential.”

Through mock interviews and practical sessions, she gained the confidence to step into the job market.

This confidence-building element is a core part of People 1st’s approach across Northern Ireland.

Unlocking Career Opportunities with support through the Employment Academy Ards and North Down

One of the most valuable aspects of the Academies programme is its strong connection to local employers.

Participants are not left to search for jobs alone—they are actively supported in finding and applying for roles.

In Liudmyla’s case, this support came from the wider Academies team.

She was introduced to opportunities within local schools and encouraged to consider a career as a classroom assistant.

“I hadn’t found these opportunities myself.”

With guidance, she applied for a role at St Mary’s Primary School.

From Application to Employment

The transition from training to employment was seamless.

With support from People 1st:

  • Her CV was tailored for the role
  • An interview was arranged
  • She was prepared for what to expect

This hands-on support made all the difference.

“Without the programme, I don’t think I would have felt confident enough.”

Shortly after, she secured the position.

The Impact on Individuals and the Local Community

Stories like Liudmyla’s demonstrate the wider impact of employment academy Ards and North Down.

These initiatives:

  • Help individuals gain independence
  • Support families through stable employment
  • Strengthen the local workforce
  • Connect employers with motivated candidates

For local councils, investing in programmes like these helps build stronger, more resilient communities.

A Rewarding New Career

Now settled into her role, Liudmyla is thriving.

Working as a classroom assistant, she supports children in their learning and development—something she finds deeply fulfilling.

“Working in a school brings me great joy.”

Her confidence has grown significantly, and she now feels equal to others in her role.

The Importance of Ongoing Support

A key strength of People 1st is the continued support offered even after employment begins.

Participants are not simply placed into jobs and left—they remain connected to a support network.

“I still feel supported by People 1st.”

This long-term approach ensures sustained success for both individuals and employers.

Encouraging Others to Take the First Step

Liudmyla now actively recommends the programme to others.

Her message is simple: don’t underestimate the value of guidance and preparation.

“Many people think writing a CV and passing an interview is easy—I thought so too.”

With the right support, what once feels overwhelming becomes achievable.

Sometimes the hardest part of any new journey is taking the first step.

For Noel, that step came at a time when life had changed direction. After surgery, he found himself out of work and unable to continue in his previous role. Like many people in that position, he was faced with a big question: what now?

What followed is a brilliant example of how the right support, the right training and the right encouragement can help someone find a whole new path. Through the Ards and North Down Employability Academy, delivered by People 1st and supported by Ards and North Down Labour Market Partnership, Noel was able to build his confidence, gain relevant knowledge and move into a rewarding new role in a school in Bangor.

Today, he is working in St Comgall’s and making a real difference in a child’s life every day. His story is honest, encouraging and a powerful reminder that a fresh start can sometimes lead exactly where you are meant to be.

How the Ards and North Down Employability Academy helped Noel take the first step

When Noel joined the programme, he was looking for a way forward after a difficult period. He had been out of work following surgery and knew he could no longer continue in the job he had done before. At the same time, he already had a strong interest in working with children through his involvement in coaching kids’ football.

That interest made the next step feel like the right one.

As Noel explains:

“I decided to join the People 1st employability scheme as I was out of work following surgery, which meant I could no longer continue in my previous job. I coach kids’ football and have always wanted to work with children, so it felt like the right step for me.”

That line alone says so much. Noel was not simply looking for any job. He was looking for a role where he could use his natural strengths, his patience and his interest in supporting young people. The Employability Academy helped him turn that instinct into a real and achievable career move.

For many participants, this is exactly what an employability programme can do. It provides a bridge between uncertainty and opportunity. It helps people recognise what they already bring to the table and gives them the tools to move forward with purpose.

How the Ards and North Down Employability Academy built Noel’s confidence for school work

One of the biggest parts of Noel’s story is confidence.

Starting over can be daunting, especially after time away from work. Even when someone has the right attitude and potential, confidence can be the missing piece. Noel’s experience shows how important it is for training to do more than just deliver information. It also needs to build belief.

During his time on the programme, Noel gained valuable insight into what working in a school environment would actually involve. He learned about the structure of a typical school day, the range of needs children may have and the standards expected in that setting. Just as importantly, he developed the confidence to believe he could succeed there.

In Noel’s words:

“The training I received was very informative, and the mentors were always on hand to help with any questions. The programme gave me the confidence to feel ready to work in a school. I developed a good understanding of what a typical school day looks like, the different needs children may have and, most importantly, the confidence that I could succeed and excel in the role.”

That final point matters. Employability support works best when it helps someone feel ready both practically and personally. Noel did not just leave with knowledge. He left with the self-belief needed to take that next opportunity seriously.

From training to employment in St Comgall’s, Bangor

A success story becomes even more powerful when it leads to a real outcome, and Noel’s certainly did.

With support from his work coach, Maria, Noel was helped with his CV and supported through the job application process. That practical guidance made a real difference and helped keep his journey moving in the right direction.

He was then contacted by St Comgall’s in Bangor for an informal chat with the principal. Thanks to the preparation and confidence he had gained through the programme, Noel felt ready to present himself well and show that he was capable of stepping into the role.

It paid off.

He was first offered a six-week contract, which has since been extended into a rolling contract. That kind of progression says a great deal. It shows that Noel not only secured the role, but also made such a positive impression that the opportunity continued.

As Noel puts it:

“My journey was very straightforward, thanks to my amazing work coach, Maria, who helped with my CV and even supported me in applying for jobs. I was contacted by St Comgall’s for an informal chat with the principal and, with the training behind me, I felt confident enough to show I was ready for employment in a school. I was initially offered a six-week contract, which has now been extended into a rolling contract. I absolutely love my job and only wish I had taken this step years ago.”

That last sentence is a lovely one, because it captures the emotional side of career change. Sometimes the right opportunity does not just provide employment. It brings relief, fulfilment and a sense that things have fallen into place.

Why Noel’s Ards and North Down Employability Academy story will inspire others

There are lots of reasons why Noel’s story stands out.

First, it speaks to people who may feel that a setback has knocked them off course. Noel was dealing with a major change after surgery and had to rethink his future. That can feel overwhelming. His experience shows that a new beginning is possible.

Second, his story will resonate with people who feel unsure about whether they are capable of stepping into a new sector. Noel openly admits that the beginning felt nerve-wracking and that he questioned himself. That honesty makes his progress even more meaningful.

He says:

“This experience has given me real belief in myself – that I can do the job and do it to the best of my ability. At the beginning, it was nerve-wracking and I did question myself, but once I settled in and got used to the routines, everything fell into place.”

Third, Noel’s story shows the real value of meaningful work. What he enjoys most about his new role is not just having a job. It is knowing that he is helping a child progress.

He explains:

“The thing I love most about working in a school is knowing I’m making a difference in a child’s life. The child I support has made excellent progress throughout the year and it gives me great pride to know I’ve played a part in that.”

That is such a strong reflection of why employability programmes matter. They do not just move people into work. They help people find roles where they can contribute, grow and feel proud of what they do.

People 1st and Ards and North Down Labour Market Partnership working together

Noel’s story is also a reminder that behind every successful outcome there is often a team of people helping make it happen.

In Noel’s case, that included his work coach Maria, whose support clearly meant a great deal to him throughout the process. One of the most memorable parts of his testimonial is the warmth with which he describes that support:

“The support I received from People 1st was exceptional. Maria was like a fairy godmother – she sprinkled a little magic and made everything feel easier. Any time I needed advice, she was there.”

That is a brilliant quote to keep in the article because it brings real personality and emotion to the piece.

This is also the ideal place to add your extra quote from Maria once you get it. I’d slot it in here as a pull quote, for example:

Maria Baker Ames, People 1st, said:
“[Insert Maria’s quote about Noel’s progress, attitude and the value of the initiative.]”

You could then follow it with a short paragraph like this:

Maria’s perspective will add another valuable layer to the story, helping readers understand not only Noel’s personal journey, but also the wider impact of the Ards and North Down Employability Academy for local people who need support, confidence and practical pathways into employment.

Noel’s story also carries another lovely endorsement of the programme: he has already recommended it to others, and his wife has since completed the course too and secured work in another school. That kind of word-of-mouth trust says a lot about how meaningful the experience has been.

A fresh start that became a new future

Noel’s journey from being out of work after surgery to securing a role he genuinely loves is a brilliant example of what can happen when determination meets the right support.

He took a chance on a new direction. He built his confidence. He gained the understanding he needed. He stepped into a school environment ready to learn and contribute. And now he is in a role where he knows he is making a difference every single day.

For anyone wondering whether it is worth signing up, Noel’s experience gives a very clear answer.

Sometimes the first move really is the most important one.

We are delighted to see Noel doing so well in St Comgall’s, Bangor, and we wish him every continued success as he moves forward in this new career.

A big thank you as well to Ards and North Down Labour Market Partnership for supporting opportunities like this and helping local people access confidence, skills and real routes into employment through the Ards and North Down Employability Academy.

People 1st Lurgan Students gain valuable insights onto the local job market on their visit to Lurgan Job and Benefits Office

LURGAN, CO. ARMAGH – March 31, 2026
Yesterday, March 30th, People 1st Students visited Lurgan Job and Benefits Office for an immersive visit designed to equip them with the tools and knowledge needed to navigate the local employment landscape. These students are aged 16-22 and are enrolled on the Skills for Life and Work programme which is our specialised programme for school leavers who want a more practical alternative to A-Levels https://people-1st.co.uk/programmes/skills-for-life-and-work-2/

The educational visit provided the students with a comprehensive, behind-the-scenes look at all aspects of employment support. Job finding coach Joan Skelton and her dedicated team hosted the group, generously giving their time to walk the students through the wide array of services available to job seekers in the community.

The visit offered students a valuable behind-the-scenes look at the services available to local jobseekers and helped them better understand how these supports can make a real difference when taking the next steps towards work. Joan Skelton and her team warmly welcomed the group and took the time to explain the many ways they assist people in finding employment, building confidence and overcoming barriers along the way.

Supporting People 1st Students – Lurgan Job and Benefits Office

A key part of the People 1st Lurgan Job and Benefits Office visit was helping students see that support is always available, even when challenges arise. As young people begin to think seriously about their future careers, it is important for them to know where they can turn for practical guidance, reassurance and advice. The visit highlighted that professional help is available locally for everything from job searching and interview preparation to confidence building and identifying the right opportunities.

During the visit, students were able to engage directly with staff and ask questions about the world of work. They learned more about how job coaches help match candidates with suitable vacancies, what employers are looking for in today’s job market and the importance of staying proactive and open-minded when exploring career options. This real-life insight helped bring employability learning to life in a practical and meaningful way.

For many students, the experience was especially valuable because it showed them that employment support is not something to be nervous about, but something to make use of with confidence. The People 1st students vist to Lurgan Job and Benefits Office reinforced the message that no one has to navigate the journey into employment alone. Having access to experienced coaches and local support services can make the process feel much less daunting and far more achievable.

People 1st Lurgan students gathered around a table during a careers and employability session at the Job and Benefits Office.

How the Lurgan Job and Benefits Office Supports Young Jobseekers

As People 1st Students visit Lurgan Job and Benefits Office, the central theme of the visit was resilience and preparation. As young people transition from education into the workforce, it is vital that they know exactly where to turn when they encounter “bumps in the road.” Whether facing a sudden career change, seeking interview preparation, or needing guidance on skill development, the visit emphasised that professional, compassionate support is readily available right on their doorstep.

Helping Students Build Confidence for Employment in Lurgan

During the visit, the students engaged directly with the coaching staff, learning about:

● Tailored Job Finding Support: How coaches match candidates with local opportunities.

● Overcoming Obstacles: Where to go and who to speak to when facing challenges or gaps in employment.

● Practical Career Skills: Insights into what modern employers are looking for and how the Job and Benefits Office bridges the gap between candidates and businesses.

Sarah Champ, Employability Tutor at People 1st Lurgan, said the visit was a really positive experience for the students and an important part of helping them prepare for life beyond the classroom. By seeing first-hand how the Job and Benefits Office supports individuals in the local community, students were able to build their awareness, ask questions and develop a stronger understanding of the help available to them in the future.

“We are incredibly grateful to Joan Skelton and her entire team at the Lurgan Job and Benefits Office for opening their doors to our students. Understanding that there is a dedicated team of coaches ready to help them through the inevitable ups and downs of their career journeys is incredibly empowering for these young adults. It takes the fear out of job hunting and replaces it with a proactive, supported approach.”

A Milestone Putting People, Community & Sustainability First

People 1st is delighted to announce that we have officially been awarded ‘Member’ level accreditation in the Belfast Business Promise – a major milestone that recognises our commitment to fair employment, community partnership, sustainability, and building a better Belfast for everyone.

This achievement follows a fantastic Learning Day at Custom House Square, where organisations gathered to share best practice and celebrate the progress being made across the city. Becoming a Belfast Business Promise Member reflects our long-standing mission: putting people first, supporting our communities, and growing a fairer, more sustainable local economy.

What Is the Belfast Business Promise?

The Belfast Business Promise is a city-wide accreditation scheme created to help employers improve how they do business – not just for profit, but for people and the planet. The initiative sets a shared standard of excellence across Belfast employers by focusing on:

  • Good jobs and fair wages
  • Inclusive recruitment
  • Prompt payment
  • Social value
  • Environmental impact
  • Strong community partnerships
  • Staff wellbeing and development

Its aim is simple: to build a network of organisations who are committed to making Belfast a better city to work in, live in, and thrive in.

The Promise is flexible and accessible to all employers – from small businesses to large public-sector bodies — and provides tailored support to help organisations progress through the levels of accreditation: Supporter → Member → Ambassador.

People 1st: Now a Belfast Business Promise Member

After months of shared learning, planning, and demonstrating our commitments in action, we’re proud to have officially reached Member level accreditation. This means we have successfully evidenced five of the eight Belfast Business Promise pledges, including two of the core requirements.

Pledges Achieved So Far

We are delighted to have met the following five pledges:

✔️ Provide Fair Wages

We are committed to ensuring our staff are paid fairly and treated with dignity, stability, and respect. This includes paying the Real Living Wage and providing security around working hours.

✔️ Work in Partnership with Our Communities

Community engagement is at the heart of People 1st. For over 30 years, we have worked alongside local employers, schools, residents, and partner organisations to improve opportunities and outcomes for people of all ages.

✔️ Offer Opportunities Into Work

Our training programmes, apprenticeships and Skills for Life and Work pathways are designed to remove barriers and open the door to employment. Every year, thousands of learners gain qualifications, upskill, and take the next step into work.

✔️ Support the Local and Social Economy

As a Northern Ireland organisation, we reinvest locally, partner with local businesses, and contribute to a sustainable and competitive economy – adding social value at every stage.

✔️ Pay Promptly

We respect the essential work of our suppliers, ensuring invoices are paid on time and supporting a responsible supply chain.

Achieving these pledges reflects our core values: equality, inclusivity, opportunity, and community strength.

Next Stop: Ambassador Status

Member accreditation is only the beginning. To reach the highest level – Ambassador – we will work to deliver the remaining three pledges:

  • Protecting the environment
  • Recruiting inclusively
  • Improving training, engagement and wellbeing

We are already making strong progress, and we look forward to the next stage of the journey with the full support of the Belfast Business Promise team.

Why This Matters for Belfast

The Belfast Business Promise isn’t just a badge – it is a movement. A growing community of employers working together to:

  • Create good, secure, fairly paid jobs
  • Strengthen the local economy
  • Reduce inequality
  • Support communities
  • Tackle climate change
  • Build a healthier, more resilient city

As an organisation deeply rooted in local impact, joining this network aligns perfectly with our purpose: to empower people, support lifelong learning, and deliver real change for individuals, families, and communities.

About the Eight Belfast Business Promise Pledges

Employers working toward accreditation commit to the following eight pledges:

  1. Provide fair wages and contracts
  2. Work in partnership with communities
  3. Protect the environment
  4. Offer opportunities into work
  5. Support the local and social economy
  6. Pay promptly
  7. Recruit inclusively
  8. Improve training, engagement and well-being

Every organisation starts as a Supporter, becomes a Member after evidencing five pledges, and can reach Ambassador status when all eight are met.

Encouraging Belfast Organisations to Get Involved

We strongly encourage other Belfast employers to join the Belfast Business Promise and help shape a more inclusive, fair, and prosperous city.

The programme was specifically designed to create new opportunities in the city’s professional and business support sectors, helping participants gain the confidence, skills, and qualifications needed to move into employment in roles such as administration, customer service, reception, and wider business support.

Over the course of eight days, participants benefitted from a structured and supportive training journey that included:

  • Five days of classroom training at Belfast City Council’s Adelaide Street site
  • Three days of hands-on work experience within the Council
  • One-to-one mentoring to build confidence, improve job applications, and prepare for interviews
  • Financial support to help cover expenses such as travel

The programme was open to people who had been unemployed or economically inactive for at least six months, or those working fewer than 16 hours per week (including those on zero-hour contracts).

Employment Academy Success- Supporting People Back Into Work

By the end of the Academy, participants had not only developed practical skills and improved their job prospects, but they had also gained valuable insights into what it is like to work within Belfast City Council.

“This is a great opportunity to gain employment with such a prestigious employer within the city. The Academy offers tailored support and mentoring to help individuals return to work and progress in their careers.”

Roberta Patton, Mentor at People 1st

The initiative is also designed to help address recruitment challenges within the sector by creating a pipeline of skilled and motivated individuals ready to take up business support roles across Belfast.

Employment Academies – Building Belfast’s Future Workforce

Belfast City Council’s Employment Academies have become a key driver in connecting local people to training and job opportunities across a wide range of industries.

Each Academy is co-designed with local employers and focuses on:

  • Practical skills – ensuring participants are job-ready
  • Career support – with mentoring, job search assistance, and interview preparation
  • Employer connections – giving insight into industry needs and opportunities
  • Qualification development – helping participants gain relevant training and certifications

The Council has already seen success with previous Academies, including partnerships with major employers such as Stena Line to support careers in the maritime sector. The Business Services Academy is the latest example of how this innovative approach is helping to meet the needs of both employers and job seekers.

A Proud Celebration at City Hall

The celebration event at Belfast City Hall reflected the hard work, dedication, and progress of the participants. It was also a recognition of the value of Employment Academies in transforming lives — opening doors for people who may have struggled to re-enter the workforce and giving them the tools they need to succeed.

Many of those who took part are now better equipped to secure employment in administration, customer service, and business support roles, with the confidence and practical experience to thrive.

daughter and mum, trying to decide what option to take after GCSE results day.
daughter and mum, trying to decide what option to take after GCSE results day.

And What to Do Instead on GCSE results day

GCSE Results Day can be a rollercoaster—for both young people and their parents.
Whether the grades are better than expected, a little disappointing, or somewhere in between, this is a moment where your support and guidance make all the difference.

At People 1st, we’ve met thousands of young people over the years who have taken very different paths to success after GCSE results day—many of whom didn’t follow the “traditional” academic route. That’s why we want to help parents avoid some of the most common pitfalls after GCSE results day, and instead open up the world of possibilities available to their child.

gcse results day disappointment

5 mistakes parents should avoid after GCSEs

1. Treating GCSEs as the be-all and end-all

It’s easy to see results as the ultimate verdict on your child’s future—but they aren’t.
Plenty of highly successful people didn’t get perfect grades at 16. Education is a journey, and not every young person thrives at the same pace or in the same way.

Instead:
Reassure your child that GCSEs are just one checkpoint. Remind them that there are many other ways to achieve their dreams, from vocational courses to apprenticeships and skills-based training. GCSE results day is a tough day for parents and children, so support each other!

2. Reacting with disappointment instead of listening

Your reaction on GCSE results day matters—a lot. Disappointment, even if unspoken, can leave a lasting impact. This is a time for calm reassurance, not judgment.

Instead:
Ask them how they feel about their results and what they’d like to do next. Let them know you’re on their side, whatever the grades.

3. Ruling out alternatives too soon after GCSE results come in!

Many parents naturally think of A-Levels as the “next step,” but they aren’t right for everyone. Some young people thrive in practical, hands-on environments rather than lecture-style learning.

Instead:
Explore all the options—NVQs, BTECs, apprenticeships, and training programmes. For example, at People 1st we offer Skills for Life & Work courses, that allow you to get a Level 1 and Level 2 NVQ while being paid £40 a week, meeting new friends and growing as a person. If you already have an empoyer connection and would like to go straight to work then we also offer Apprenticeships in sectors from retail to hospitality, hairdressing to construction and if you do not know where to start but would like to try some shorter 5 day online courses there are Academies, where young people can try different careers before committing.

4. Rushing into decisions

When emotions are high, it’s tempting to make quick choices just to move forward—but these decisions can lead to frustration later.

Instead:
Take a breather. Use the days and weeks after GCSE results day to research options, talk to training providers, and even arrange taster sessions. Our friendly students advisers at People 1st can help you explore the routes available without any pressure. We have Student Support Officers in each branch in Belfast- South and West, Lisburn, Lurgan, Newry and Portadown. They are all very friendly, supportive and experienced and can talk you over the course options and People 1st and try to get all students who come through our doors a course that suits them!

5. Imposing your own expectations

Every parent wants their child to succeed, but success should be defined by their interests and strengths—not our own ambitions for them. Take time after GCSE results day to think about this and help them find the best route for them. Don’t push them down a route that might not be best for them!

Instead:
Ask open-ended questions:

  • “What subjects or activities do you enjoy most?”
  • “Do you prefer hands-on work or studying in a classroom?”
  • “Where would you like to see yourself in a year’s time?”

These conversations will give you clues about which path might suit them best.

How People 1st Can Help

We know that GCSE results are just the starting point. That’s why we offer multiple routes to help young people move forward:

  • Vocational courses to build skills in areas like retail, construction, business, and more.
  • Apprenticeships combining paid work with on-the-job training.
  • Academy programmes to try different industries before choosing a career path.
  • Employability support—including CV help, interview prep, and confidence building.

We’ve seen time and again that with the right guidance, every young person can find a pathway that fits them—and thrive.

“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will spend its whole life believing that it is stupid”

Albert Einstein, theoretical physicist

Final thought: Your child’s journey doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s. The right support, encouragement, and training can turn even a disappointing GCSE results day into the start of something amazing. Reach out, get all the options and then help them make the best decision for them!

Buncrana Job Fair Success- the People 1st team in Buncrana recently hosted a fantastic Job Fair at the Inishowen Gateway Hotel, drawing strong attendance from employers, jobseekers and community partners across the region. The event was a true example of teamwork, professionalism and local collaboration — and a real success story for the Buncrana branch.

Buncrana Job Fair Success- A Well-Delivered Event

The Job Fair, which took place across two busy sessions, was organised and delivered to an exceptionally high standard. A huge well done goes to the Buncrana team — Emmet, Margaret, and especially Lisa — whose preparation, enthusiasm and commitment made the event such a success.

Lisa dedicated significant time to creating and delivering a polished presentation for attendees, receiving excellent feedback from employers and jobseekers alike. Alongside Emmet, she also worked tirelessly in the lead-up to the event, engaging employers, coordinating logistics and ensuring that clients were supported to attend — something clearly reflected in the strong turnout on the day.

Support From Across the People 1st Network at the Buncrana Job Fair

Events like this don’t happen without teamwork, and the support from across the wider People 1st family played a key role:

  • Majida ensured the Buncrana office remained fully covered throughout the event
  • Oleksandra supported attendees with translation where needed
  • Gillian Kearney travelled down to provide excellent Apprenticeships support
  • Stephen Quigley, a former People 1st employee, attended in his role representing KSK Rathmor Engineering & Recruitment, strengthening the employer presence and bringing valued industry insight

The combination of staff commitment, operational support and employer engagement helped create a welcoming and productive environment for everyone who attended.

Strong Employer Engagement and Promising Outcomes– Buncrana Job Fair Success

The Job Fair brought together a diverse mix of local employers actively looking to recruit. Thanks to the combined efforts of Lisa and Emmet, the sessions were well attended by motivated jobseekers ready to explore opportunities and take the next step towards employment.

The Buncrana team will now be focusing on follow-up support, helping clients apply for roles, prepare for interviews and progress into real job opportunities. Early signs are extremely positive, and we are hopeful that a number of successful job outcomes will emerge from the event.

A Celebration of Teamwork in Action

A huge congratulations to the entire Buncrana team for delivering such a valuable and impactful event. Their commitment to supporting clients, engaging employers and representing People 1st with professionalism and care is truly appreciated.

As Glenn always says:

“Team Work Makes the Dream Work.”

And the Buncrana Job Fair success is proof of exactly that.

A Journey of Resilience, Growth and New Beginnings for Mustafa

We’re are delighted to share that Mustafa Alshowely, a People 1st learner, has been named Essential Skills Learner of the Year 2025 at the OCN NI Learning Endeavour Awards in Belfast.

This amazing achievement recognises not just academic progress — but personal strength, determination, and how far someone can go when given the chance to learn and grow.

The ceremony took place at the iconic Titanic Belfast, adding an extra touch of celebration and inspiration to the day.

From No Formal Education to National Recognition, winning Essential Skills Learner of the Year

Mustafa arrived in Northern Ireland in 2022 after experiencing years of hardship and instability. As a member of the Bedoon tribe — a stateless community in Kuwait — he was denied access to education and many of the opportunities most of us take for granted.

When he joined People 1st, he spoke no English and had never attended school. But from the moment he started, his tutors recognised a quiet determination and a willingness to work hard — and learn everything he could.

Fast forward to today, and Mustafa has completed:

  • Level 1 and Level 2 in Numeracy
  • Level 2 in Communication

These qualifications are more than just certificates. They’ve helped him gain confidence, improve his English, and open doors to future education and employment — things he was once denied. He’s also volunteering on our IT Professional Placement Team, supporting learners and staff — and inspiring everyone he meets.

Making a Difference at People 1st and Beyond

Mustafa’s journey is not just one of personal growth — he is also giving back. He volunteers as part of the IT Professional Placement Team at People 1st, assisting staff with day-to-day IT issues and helping other learners build confidence in digital skills.

He is widely admired by tutors and peers for his generosity, calmness, and commitment to helping others — often acting as a peer mentor and source of encouragement for those on a similar journey.

His classmates describe him as kind, helpful, and encouraging — always ready to lend a hand or help someone understand something new.

He’s known for being a calm and steady presence in class, and his ability to build friendships across cultures and language barriers is a credit to his character.

Despite all he’s been through — including separation from family, living in supported accommodation, and adjusting to a brand new country — he’s remained focused, positive, and hopeful.

Overcoming the Odds to Succeed!

What sets Mustafa apart is not just what he has achieved — but the obstacles he has overcome to get there.

  • Starting from scratch and not giving up
  • Learning English from the very basics
  • Building confidence and finding his voice
  • Supporting others while continuing to grow himself
  • Navigating a new culture and language
  • Starting from zero educational background

Despite this, Mustafa has shown resilience, humility, and a powerful desire to build a better future. He has mapped out his next steps, with plans to pursue cyber security, Level 3 qualifications, and eventually university-level education.

A Testament to the Power of Learning and Support- Winning

Essential Skills Learner of the Year

At People 1st, we believe in meeting learners where they are — and walking with them as they grow. Mustafa’s story is proof of what’s possible when determination meets the right support system.

He represents everything we stand for: inclusion, empowerment, and education as a vehicle for transformation.

What’s Next for Mustafa?

Mustafa is currently exploring opportunities in IT and cyber security, with plans to progress to Level 3 study and eventually into higher education. His success winning Essential Skills Learner of the Year at the OCN NI Awards marks not the end, but the beginning of what promises to be a bright and impactful career.

About the OCN NI Learning Endeavour Awards

Each year, the OCN NI Learning Endeavour Awards celebrate learners from across Northern Ireland who have gone the extra mile. The Essential Skills category recognises those who’ve made real progress in areas like literacy, numeracy and communication — building skills that unlock wider life and work opportunities.

Mustafa’s story stood out for its heart, honesty and incredible determination — and we’re so proud that he’s been recognised in this way, and took the main prize as Essential Skills Learner of the Year.

A Team Effort Behind the Scenes

We also want to recognise the fantastic People 1st team who supported Mustafa every step of the way. Huge thanks to Diane (Maths), David (English), Jacqueline (ICT) — and a special mention to Conor, a former colleague, who took the time to submit Mustafa’s nomination.
Their encouragement, guidance, and belief in him helped open the door to this incredible achievement. It really does take a village — and this was a shared win for everyone involved!

Learning That Changes Lives

At People 1st, we’re incredibly lucky to support learners like Mustafa. We know that learning isn’t always easy — and everyone’s path is different. That’s why we focus on small class sizes, patient support, and building confidence alongside qualifications.

Mustafa’s journey reminds us why Essential Skills matter. They open doors. They create second chances. And they show that it’s never too late to learn something new.

We are incredibly proud of Mustafa and all he has achieved. His story is a reminder that education changes lives — and that it’s never too late to begin again.

Congratulations, Mustafa — you inspire us all, and can’t wait to see what comes next.
