Integration through Maths

People 1st is thrilled to announce Integration Through Maths, a free programme designed to empower refugees in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area (DCSDC). This initiative focuses on developing essential English language and math skills, while creating opportunities for community connection and personal growth. It is part of the Department for the Economy Multiply Programme, that is being delivered by colleges, universities and local councils in partnership with voluntary and community organisations like People 1st.

 

What is Integration through Maths? 

It is a free programme which will help participants will gain practical tools to enhance their independence in daily life. From budgeting and preparing for further education to exploring job opportunities, the skills learned are invaluable for those building a new future in the Northwest.

📍 Location: Holywell Trust, Bishop Street, L/Derry
👥 Eligibility: Refugees living in the DCSDC area
📝 Requirements: No prior math experience needed. Join a friendly, welcoming space to meet others and learn!

Derry City and Strabane District Council

This programme is part of the Multiply Programme. The Department for the Economy is leading on the delivery of the Multiply programme in the north of Ireland. The programme will support the Economic Vision for a regionally balanced economy with good jobs and increased productivity which delivers on decarbonisation. funded by the Initiative: Maths for Speakers of Other Languages.

Funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, Multiply will support the delivery of numeracy training to more than 3,000 adults through 115 initiatives delivered by further education colleges, universities and local councils in partnership with voluntary and community organisations

Who is eligible for the Multiply Programme?

Adults aged 19 and over and who do not currently hold a Grade C or Level 2 GCSE in Mathematics can apply.

There are some exceptions to the criteria above:

  • if you are aged 17-19 and not in employment, education or training you should speak to your local provider who will be able to advise you further
  • if you have held a mathematics qualification for a number of years and never applied your learning, subject to a skills’ assessment, you may be able to take part in the Multiply programme

Recognising the importance of numeracy skills for everyone, regardless of native language, this project will target adult learners who needs additional support to improve basic maths skills, build confidence, and participate more effectively in life and work within NI.

Following on from Derry City and Strabane District Council (DCSDC) Integration Programme for Asylum Seekers and Refugees (supported participants in learning English and integrating into the community by building relationships and confidence), this intervention will:

Support participants in managing budgets and daily costs based on their income. It will support participants in finding the most affective way of spending money to ensure it goes further.
With English becoming participants second language, this programme will provide participants with a forum to practices their English specking skills by communicating with facilitators and tutors in English.
Embedded within this programme, where possible, participants will obtain either Functional or Essential Skills in Numeracy to a level of their ability (Level 3 Foundation, Level 1, Level 2)
