A Journey of Resilience, Growth and New Beginnings for Mustafa

We’re are delighted to share that Mustafa Alshowely, a People 1st learner, has been named Essential Skills Learner of the Year 2025 at the OCN NI Learning Endeavour Awards in Belfast.

This amazing achievement recognises not just academic progress — but personal strength, determination, and how far someone can go when given the chance to learn and grow.

The ceremony took place at the iconic Titanic Belfast, adding an extra touch of celebration and inspiration to the day.

From No Formal Education to National Recognition, winning Essential Skills Learner of the Year

Mustafa arrived in Northern Ireland in 2022 after experiencing years of hardship and instability. As a member of the Bedoon tribe — a stateless community in Kuwait — he was denied access to education and many of the opportunities most of us take for granted.

When he joined People 1st, he spoke no English and had never attended school. But from the moment he started, his tutors recognised a quiet determination and a willingness to work hard — and learn everything he could.

Fast forward to today, and Mustafa has completed:

  • Level 1 and Level 2 in Numeracy
  • Level 2 in Communication

These qualifications are more than just certificates. They’ve helped him gain confidence, improve his English, and open doors to future education and employment — things he was once denied. He’s also volunteering on our IT Professional Placement Team, supporting learners and staff — and inspiring everyone he meets.

Making a Difference at People 1st and Beyond

Mustafa’s journey is not just one of personal growth — he is also giving back. He volunteers as part of the IT Professional Placement Team at People 1st, assisting staff with day-to-day IT issues and helping other learners build confidence in digital skills.

He is widely admired by tutors and peers for his generosity, calmness, and commitment to helping others — often acting as a peer mentor and source of encouragement for those on a similar journey.

His classmates describe him as kind, helpful, and encouraging — always ready to lend a hand or help someone understand something new.

He’s known for being a calm and steady presence in class, and his ability to build friendships across cultures and language barriers is a credit to his character.

Despite all he’s been through — including separation from family, living in supported accommodation, and adjusting to a brand new country — he’s remained focused, positive, and hopeful.

Overcoming the Odds to Succeed!

What sets Mustafa apart is not just what he has achieved — but the obstacles he has overcome to get there.

  • Starting from scratch and not giving up
  • Learning English from the very basics
  • Building confidence and finding his voice
  • Supporting others while continuing to grow himself
  • Navigating a new culture and language
  • Starting from zero educational background

Despite this, Mustafa has shown resilience, humility, and a powerful desire to build a better future. He has mapped out his next steps, with plans to pursue cyber security, Level 3 qualifications, and eventually university-level education.

A Testament to the Power of Learning and Support- Winning

Essential Skills Learner of the Year

At People 1st, we believe in meeting learners where they are — and walking with them as they grow. Mustafa’s story is proof of what’s possible when determination meets the right support system.

He represents everything we stand for: inclusion, empowerment, and education as a vehicle for transformation.

What’s Next for Mustafa?

Mustafa is currently exploring opportunities in IT and cyber security, with plans to progress to Level 3 study and eventually into higher education. His success winning Essential Skills Learner of the Year at the OCN NI Awards marks not the end, but the beginning of what promises to be a bright and impactful career.

We also want to recognise the fantastic People 1st team who supported Mustafa every step of the way. Huge thanks to Diane (Maths), David (English), Jacqueline (ICT) — and a special mention to Conor, a former colleague, who took the time to submit Mustafa’s nomination.
Their encouragement, guidance, and belief in him helped open the door to this incredible achievement. It really does take a village — and this was a shared win for everyone involved!

Learning That Changes Lives

At People 1st, we’re incredibly lucky to support learners like Mustafa. We know that learning isn’t always easy — and everyone’s path is different. That’s why we focus on small class sizes, patient support, and building confidence alongside qualifications.

Mustafa’s journey reminds us why Essential Skills matter. They open doors. They create second chances. And they show that it’s never too late to learn something new.

Our First Year as an EOT: Reflecting and Celebrating

This June, the People 1st team came together to mark a very special milestone — one year as an Employee Ownership Trust!

Held at the Dunsilly Hotel, our anniversary celebration brought together team members from across our branches and head office to celebrate an incredible first year, reflect on what we’ve achieved, and look ahead to what’s next.

The day was packed with energy, positivity and genuine pride — a celebration of how far we’ve come since making the move to employee ownership.

Events from the Employee Ownership Celebration day!

  • A review of our first year as an EOT showcased not only our strongest year in business to date — but also the fantastic achievements and collective spirit that has grown across the organisation.
  • We were delighted to welcome Aidan O’Neill and Catherine Muldoon from Employee Ownership Ireland (EOI), who hosted a brilliant Q&A alongside our own Director Ronan Heenan — sharing insights, answering questions, and inspiring us all for the future of employee ownership in Northern Ireland.
  • A highlight of the day was the introduction of our Charity of the Year — Alzheimer’s Society — a cause close to many hearts across our team.
  • Guest speaker Ciaran May of Natural Resilience gave an inspiring session on maintaining mental strength and positivity — a timely and motivating message that resonated with everyone.
  • And of course, there was plenty of fun! From quizzes and spot prizes to icebreakers and team activities, the energy in the room reflected the unique People 1st spirit that has helped drive us through this fantastic year.

What a successful celebration

A huge thank you to everyone who made the day such a success — and to our hosts at the Dunsilly Hotel for looking after us so well!

What Employee Ownership Means for People 1st

Our transition to employee ownership is far more than a structural change — it’s a commitment to our people and to the communities we serve.

As an EOT, we have secured the future of People 1st as a dynamic and sustainable organisation that will continue to serve Northern Ireland for years to come.

This model ensures that:

  • Every team member shares in the company’s success
  • Jobs are protected and rooted in the local community
  • We invest in long-term growth, not short-term gain
  • A culture of collaboration and innovation is encouraged
  • Employees feel empowered, valued and invested in our shared mission

Already, the EOT model has helped transform how we work — with greater collaboration, job satisfaction, and ownership across the business.

Looking Ahead — Our Second Year as an Employee Ownership Trust

As we head into our second year as an EOT, we do so with real momentum and pride. We’ve just completed our most successful business year yet — and with our team driving that success, we are excited for what’s next.

From our Belfast head office to our growing network of branches across Northern Ireland and Donegal, People 1st remains as committed as ever to our mission:

  • ✅ Empowering individuals with training, skills and confidence
  • ✅ Supporting businesses with professional development and apprenticeships
  • ✅ Making a positive impact in communities across Northern Ireland

We are incredibly proud of our team — and of what we’ve achieved in this first year of employee ownership. Here’s to building an even brighter future — together. 💙

Group of students from People 1st in Lurgan with Thick as Thieves Graffiti artists, standing with aprons and masks on ready to spray.

People 1st Lurgan, in collaboration with the renowned local graffiti artists Thick as Thieves, transformed a Monday into a vibrant celebration of fun, creativity, and teamwork. Participants engaged in an exhilarating graffiti workshop, guided by the expertise of award-winning artists Helen Levy (aka Kanine) and Gary Real Rowe.

Thick as Thieves Graffiti fundamentals

The workshop, held on Monday March 31st, provided a unique opportunity for People 1st students to learn the fundamentals of graffiti art under the tutelage of Levy and Rowe, who operate their studio and shop from Mount Zion House, Lurgan. Participants were divided into three teams, each tasked with creating collaborative artworks based on distinct themes: Egypt and Space, Ocean and Flowers, and Jungle and Mythology. Then they set about creating their artwork using some of the techniques shared by Gary and Helen earlier in the workshop! It was a great way to express themselves and start to put into practice some of these new skills!

Thick as Thieves base in Lurgan, with their

Creative Energy and teamwork!

The focus was not only on artistic expression but also on fostering teamwork. Each team had to brainstorm, design, and execute their vision, making critical decisions about composition and colour palettes. The collaborative effort resulted in a stunning array of murals that showcased the participants’ newfound skills and creative flair. As you can see below- each graffiti artboard was so different as the input of each individual was shared on the canvas! They did fantastically well, and created some beautiful vibrant pieces of work- well done all! Everyone got involved in the workshop and there was a real excitement and energy around the place! It is always great to try out something different and learn something new, to add to your skillset and they surely did this!!

Thick as Thieves Graffiti Workshop Winners

After a spirited competition, the team tackling the “Egypt and Space” theme emerged as the winner, impressing the judges with their innovative design and skilful execution.

Thank you Thick as Thieves for this creative workshop!

As part of the Skills for Life and Work qualification, our students take Employability and Personal Development classes—and it was through Employability Tutor Sarah that this exciting collaboration came to life!

We’re always looking for ways to connect our students with the local community and give them opportunities to express their creativity through hands-on experiences like this. This was their first-ever graffiti workshop, and they absolutely loved it! We can’t wait to do more!

“This workshop was a fantastic experience. It was incredible to see how quickly everyone embraced the art form and worked together to create such impressive pieces. We are grateful to Helen and Gary from Thick as Thieves for sharing their passion and expertise.”

Sarah Champ, Employability Coordinator from People 1st Lurgan

Engaging in art isn’t just about creativity—it’s a powerful tool for self-development and well-being. Taking a break from traditional lessons to explore something new helps students build confidence, develop problem-solving skills, and express themselves in a unique way. Activities like this also encourage teamwork, reduce stress, and improve focus, making it an incredibly valuable experience for both personal and professional growth

It’s always a pleasure to see the creativity that emerges when people are given the opportunity to express themselves. The teamwork and enthusiasm displayed by the participants were truly inspiring. We are delighted to have partnered with People 1st Lurgan to bring this unique artistic experience to the community.”

Helen Levy from Thick as Thieves

Using creative art to bring people together

This event highlights the power of art to bring people together, encourage collaboration, and unlock hidden talents. People 1st Lurgan and Thick as Thieves look forward to future collaborations that continue to enrich the local community through creativity and artistic expression. Thank you to Sarah from Lurgan for organising this and to the students for being so engaged with the art, and to Helen and Gary from Thick as Thieves, for sharing their time and creative experience with us- what a day!!!

What You Need to Know and How People 1st Can Help!

If you’re a supervisor, team leader, or subcontractor on construction sites in Northern Ireland, significant changes are on the horizon. Starting December 31, 2024, the Construction Skills Register (CSR) will require all site supervisors to hold an NVQ Level 3 or 4 in Construction Site Supervision to renew or obtain the CSR Gold Site Supervisor card. This change marks a new era of qualification standards, designed to ensure higher competency and safety in construction site management and to bring NI legislation in line with GB legislation.

To support those in the industry, People 1st is pleased to offer the final course before this legislation takes effect, happening on Wednesday, December 11. Led by our head tutor in Site Supervision, Peter Daly, this training will provide one-on-one support to guide participants through the certification process. Peter Daly brings extensive experience to the role, making him an exceptional leader for this vital course.

What This Change Means for You

The introduction of this mandatory qualification is part of an industry-wide effort to ensure that site supervisors have the advanced skills needed for safe and effective site management. Previously, supervisors could renew their cards through alternative routes, such as industry accreditation. However, this pathway will be discontinued by the end of 2024. Supervisors without an NVQ Level 4 will no longer qualify for the Gold Site Supervisor card, which could have significant financial implications as they may only be eligible for lower-tier positions.

Common Questions About the New CSR Site Supervisor Requirements

As we approach the deadline, here are some key questions supervisors may have about these changes:

  1. What specific qualification is now required to renew my CSR Gold Site Supervisor card after December 31, 2024?
From December 31, 2024, supervisors must hold an NVQ Level 4 in Construction Site Supervision. This will replace the industry accreditation route, which allowed supervisors to obtain the card based on work experience alone.
  2. Can I renew my current CSR Gold Site Supervisor card without an NVQ?
Yes, supervisors can renew their card without an NVQ by completing a CSR Site Supervisor Refresher course, but this renewal will only be valid until December 31, 2024. After this date, the NVQ Level 4 will be mandatory.
  3. What are my options if I currently hold a CSR Site Supervisor card but do not have an NVQ qualification?
You have three options: (1) renew with a shorter validity by taking the Refresher course, (2) downgrade to a Green Labourer’s or White Health & Safety card, or (3) begin working toward the NVQ Level 4 to ensure eligibility for the Gold Site Supervisor card after the cutoff.
  4. How long does it take to complete the NVQ Level 4 in Construction Site Supervision?
The duration varies depending on individual progress and course structure, but People 1st offers flexible options to help participants complete the qualification while continuing to work.
  5. Will there be additional testing requirements to obtain or renew my CSR Site Supervisor card?
Yes, alongside the NVQ Level 4, supervisors will need to complete the CITB Health, Safety, and Environment test, which is also known as the touchscreen test.
  6. What are the benefits of upgrading to an NVQ Level 4 for my career as a site supervisor?
Obtaining the NVQ Level 4 not only meets the new CSR requirements but also enhances your career prospects, validating your skills and knowledge in construction supervision. It can open doors to higher responsibility roles and improve earning potential.
  7. What financial impact could I face if I don’t obtain the NVQ Level 4 for my CSR Site Supervisor card?
Without the NVQ Level 4, you won’t qualify for the CSR Gold Site Supervisor card renewal after December 31, 2024. This could result in a pay reduction, as you may only qualify for lower-tier roles that do not receive supervisor-level pay. Investing in the NVQ Level 4 can help maintain your position and income.

Since joining People 1st in 2015 as Contract Manager, Eamonn has played a central role in the company’s expansion into the Republic of Ireland. Under his guidance, People 1st has won several prestigious awards, including the AONTAS Star Award and the European Regiostars Award, while also increasing its footprint in Donegal and the North West.

With over 39 years of senior management experience, Eamonn is known for his personable leadership style, and his dedication to nurturing apprenticeships and job activation programs has helped People 1st reach new levels of success. Eamonn’s new role as Director will allow him to continue driving growth across borders, further strengthening People 1st’s position as a leader in training and education across the island of Ireland.

Joining Forces: Strengthening the Leadership Team Under Employee Ownership

These leadership appointments come on the heels of People 1st’s transition to an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) in June of this year. The move to EOT status ensures that employees are not only part of the company’s success but also play a direct role in shaping its future. This shift represents a commitment to stability, transparency, and employee engagement—principles that have always been at the core of People 1st’s values.

The transition to an EOT was guided by founder Bernadette Daly, who started People 1st over more than thirty years ago, back in 1992. As one of the trustees of the EOT, Bernadette will provide vital support and guidance to the new Directors, ensuring a smooth transition and helping the trustees establish themselves in the right direction. Her deep knowledge of the company’s mission and values will be key in maintaining People 1st’s commitment to quality and growth during this new chapter.

The three new directors Gráinne McBride, Aidan Kelly, and Eamonn Moore, will now join forces with current Directors Ronan Heenan and Brenda Kernaghan to form a strengthened leadership team. Together, they are well-equipped to lead People 1st through its next phase of development, ensuring continued innovation, service excellence, and positive impact for employees, businesses, and communities alike.

Looking Ahead: A Unified Vision for Growth

The promotion of these three outstanding leaders to Director roles reflects People 1st’s ongoing commitment to strategic growth and the delivery of exceptional training solutions. As the company embraces its new structure under employee ownership, the combined leadership team is poised to build on its legacy of success, fostering innovation and creating opportunities for both employees and learners across Northern Ireland and beyond.
