Launch of a Unique Opportunity to work in Therapeutic Residential Childcare

People 1st is proud to announce the launch of a new Residential Care Worker Academy, developed in partnership with Tearmann Care — a specialist provider of therapeutic residential childcare. This academy is designed to train, support, and recruit a team of highly skilled, trauma-informed care professionals to work with children aged 6–13 who have experienced complex developmental trauma and attachment difficulties.

Set in a peaceful location just a short drive from Belfast and Lisburn, Tearmann Cottage is a modern, purpose-built residential home that will provide a nurturing and secure environment for two young children. The home has been carefully designed to offer a sense of calm and safety, supporting each child on their personal healing journey.

About Tearmann Care

Established in 2025, Tearmann Care provides a safe and supportive sanctuary for children who need specialist, trauma-informed care. Their approach is built around the belief that every child deserves stability, compassion, and the opportunity to heal in a therapeutic environment. Tearmann’s flagship setting, Tearmann Cottage, sets a new standard for residential childcare in Northern Ireland.

What is the Residential Childcare Academy?

The Residential Care Worker Academy offers a fully supported pathway into a rewarding career in therapeutic residential care. This bespoke training programme is designed for individuals with personal or professional experience supporting children — especially those affected by developmental trauma.

Through a mix of online and in-person workshops, participants will gain both theoretical knowledge and practical insight into the unique challenges and rewards of working in a therapeutic setting.

What Happens After the Academy?

Graduates of the Academy will have access to:

  • Specialist in-depth training with Tearmann Care
  • The Level 2 Award in Safe and Effective Practice
  • The NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care, available through ApprenticeshipsNI for eligible candidates

All successful participants will also receive a guaranteed interview with Tearmann Care — providing a real opportunity to join a supportive and compassionate care team.

This programme is ideal for people who:

  • Have personal or professional experience supporting children with trauma
  • Are compassionate, resilient, and eager to make a difference
  • Are able to commit to 5–6 days of training (online and in-person)

A Leap of Faith at 55: Margaret’s Inspiring Journey

Changing careers can be daunting at any age, but Margaret Strong is proof that it’s never too late to follow your passion, read on to hear more about this career change success story in childcare!. At 55, after 22 years in factory work, she took a leap of faith and transitioned into childcare, a field she had always dreamed of working in. Today, she is thriving as a Room Leader at Clearly Kids Lisburn—and her career change success story is nothing short of inspiring.

From Factory Work to Childcare: How It All Began

For most of her adult life, Margaret worked in a factory while raising her three daughters. But once her youngest went off to university, she knew it was time for a change. She spotted a job advert from Clearly Kids Lisburn looking for nursery assistants—no experience necessary—and decided to apply. Despite some initial self-doubt about her age, Margaret was delighted to secure the role!

Around the same time, All Age Apprenticeships became available, allowing anyone working 21 hours or more in the industry to earn a fully funded NVQ qualification. This was the perfect opportunity for Margaret to gain professional training while working, setting her on a brand-new career path.

Studying with People 1st: Support Every Step of the Way

Margaret began her studies at the Dairy Farm campus, enrolling in Essential Skills courses in ICT, Maths, and English before progressing to her Level 2 NVQ in Childcare. With encouragement from her **People 1st tutors—Jennifer, Paul, and Kate—**and the unwavering support of her manager Shauna, Margaret successfully completed her Level 2 qualification and has now moved on to her Level 3 Childcare Diploma alongside Level 2 Maths and English.

💬 “At first, the thought of studying again was overwhelming. Even setting up Zoom for my classes was a challenge! But my tutor Jennifer Boyle was so patient and supportive. The staff at People 1st are so down-to-earth—it’s nothing like school, and that really helped me relax and enjoy learning again.”

Thriving in Childcare: Career Change Success with Purpose

Margaret has truly found her calling in childcare. Now a Room Leader for the 3-4-year-olds, her days are filled with planning engaging activities, ensuring health and safety, and guiding her team members. She also loves getting involved in hands-on activities with the children, such as:

  • 🎨 Messy play (painting, slime, junk art)
  • 🌱 Gardening (planting spring bulbs)
  • 🛁 Making bath bombs and friendship bracelets
  • 🚀 Outdoor play and exploration

One of Margaret’s favorite things about her job is the special connection she builds with the children. 💕 “They almost see me as their granny, and that actually works in my favour! They listen, respect me, and we have so much fun together.”

Margaret’s dedication has not gone unnoticed. Her manager at Clearly Kids Lisburn, Shauna Broderick, shared her thoughts on Margaret’s journey:

“Margaret has worked for Clearly Kids, Lisburn for 3 years now. She is a great asset to our team, she goes above and beyond to provide a high standard of care for the children.

She is always keen to lend a helping hand, she has developed a strong bond with both the children and the parents and she is always keen to learn. We are delighted she is progressing so well on her Level 3 program.”

Overcoming Challenges and Building Confidence

Returning to education after more than two decades in a completely different field wasn’t without its challenges. Margaret initially felt nervous about studying again, particularly in subjects like maths and ICT. However, the supportive environment at People 1st and the encouragement from her tutors Paul, Kate and Jennifer helped her gain confidence in her abilities.

“I never thought I’d be able to go back to studying, but the team at People 1st made it so much easier. The classes are structured in a way that makes learning engaging and accessible, even if you’ve been out of education for years,” says Margaret.

The Rewarding Experience of Working in Childcare

Margaret’s transition into childcare has been deeply fulfilling. She finds immense joy in helping young children learn, grow, and develop in their early years. Her hands-on experience in the nursery has reinforced her belief that she made the right career move. “There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing a child achieve a milestone, knowing you played a small part in their journey,” she shares.

Her hard work and dedication have now earned her the position of Room Leader, where she mentors newer staff, helps implement learning activities, and ensures the highest standards of care in the nursery.

Advice to Others Considering a Career Change

Margaret’s story is a testament to the fact that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams. For those considering a career change, she has some words of encouragement:

💡 “I had 13 years left before retirement, and I just couldn’t see myself staying in the factory. Childcare keeps me young, active, and happy. The days fly by, and I love what I do. If you’re thinking about a career change, don’t let fear hold you back—just take that first step!”

Level 2 and Level 3 Childcare success for Nicola, Lara, Cerys and Jordan

At People 1st, we take immense pride in nurturing and guiding aspiring professionals towards successful careers in various industries. Today, we’re thrilled to celebrate the remarkable achievements of Nicola, Lara, Cerys, and Jordan, who have all completed their diploma qualifications in childcare under the mentorship of Bridget McCabe and Gillian Duffy from People 1st. The dedication, perseverance, and passion for childcare they have shown over their apprenticeships have been truly inspiring.

Upon successful completion of the Level 2 Childcare Diploma, individuals can pursue entry-level roles in the childcare sector. This may include positions such as nursery assistant, daycare worker, playgroup assistant, or support worker in schools or community settings. The qualification provides a solid foundation for further career progression and professional development in childcare.

Upon successful completion of the Level 3 Childcare Diploma, individuals can pursue a range of career paths within the childcare sector. These may include working as a nursery practitioner, preschool assistant, childcare worker in a school setting, or as a private nanny. Some learners may also choose to further their studies by progressing to higher education or specialised childcare qualifications.

Level 2 Childcare success for Jordan Bridgett

The Level 2 Childcare Diploma is a foundational qualification aimed at individuals who are looking to start a career in childcare. It provides learners with the essential knowledge and skills needed to work under supervision in various childcare settings.

Jordan Bridgett just took a massive leap from the world of hairdressing into the world of childcare and is now officially qualified with a Level 2 Childcare Learning Development (CCLD) from People 1st, all while working alongside the talented team at Robins Nest Day Nursery in Lurgan!

Jordans journey with People 1st began back in October ’22, and she has loved the flexibility of her online classes, while continuing to shine in work every day with the fabulous team at Robins Nest Day Nursery! A massive shoutout to the wonderful family running Robins Nest Day Nursery – Victoria (on the left) and Emma (on the right) are not just managers, but a vital part of the family that makes this nursery truly special! 💖 We would also like to say a special thanks to Jordan’s fantastic childcare tutor, Diana Delaney, and her stellar mentor, Bridget McCabe – they’ve been a great support on this journey!

Level 3 childcare success for Cerys Nesbitt

The Level 3 Childcare Diploma provided by NCFE CACHE (the Council for Awards in Care, Health and Education) is a comprehensive qualification designed to equip individuals for a rewarding career in childcare. It covers a wide range of topics essential for working with children, including child development, safeguarding, promoting positive behaviour, and supporting children’s learning and development.

Our next Apprentice Cerys Nesbitt has demonstrated a natural talent for connecting with children, which has been evident from the start of her employment alongside the lovely team in Pineview Day Nursery in Lurgan.

Pictured here with Caroline McGuigan, Childcare Manager at Pineview Day Nursery in Lurgan, Cerys has truly exemplified dedication and hard work throughout her journey to gaining this qualification!! She managed to successfully balance her coursework alongside her work commitments, showcasing her determination and passion for childcare. We are all immensely proud and delighted for her accomplishment! Thanks to all the Pineview team for their support too!!! A huge shoutout to Cerys’ tutor, Cora Harrison, and mentor, Bridget McCabe, for their guidance and support along the way. 🙌 It’s a true testament to teamwork and commitment.

Level 3 Childcare success for Nicola Hanna with People 1st

Our third apprentice Nicola Hanna, has excelled in her role with Safe and Sound Daycare in Ballynahinch, and has recently completed her Level 3 qualification.

Nicola is pictured here on the left with her Manager Amanda Lavery who is delighted for Nicola in gaining this sought-after qualification!!! Nicola was able to work alongside the team as normal while completing this Level 3 Diploma, learning new things at work and also while training with us and it will be a great addition to her skillset. Well done from all the team at People 1st and all the best from your Childcare Tutor Joanne Mulholland and People 1st Mentor Bridget McCabe!! Our final Level 3 Childcare success story is Lara Pavis

Another success story for our students with Lara Pavis, who has completed her Level 3 Childcare qualification with People 1st and her employer Bumbles Day Care in Belfast. A massive congratulations to Lara from all the team at People 1st, you really put the work in alongside your day to day tasks at Bumbles and you are now a fully qualified practitioner and a skilled and talented one at that!!
