The primary purpose of the course is to prepare for further learning or training by developing knowledge in health and social care; the knowledge provided meets nationally recognised standards for adult social care at this level.
To give you an understanding of this course, topics include:
- Principles of communication in adult social care settings
- Principles of personal development in adult social care settings
- Principles of diversity, equality and inclusion in adult social care settings
- Principles of safeguarding and protection in health and social care
- Principles for implementing duty of care in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
- Understand the role of the social care worker
If you are aged 16 to 25 (and over 25 for some qualifications)* and working a minimum of 21 hours per week, you could access this course for free through the ApprenticeshipsNI programme.

You can complete further study such as the Level 3 Diploma in Health & Social Care Northern Ireland. You could also progress in work in roles such as care worker, senior care worker, community care support officer, healthcare assistant, clinical support worker, therapy assistant.
