The course is designed to provide you with the necessary basic skills and knowledge for working with children, along with relevant core skills such as teamwork and health and safety, which will help you to advance towards more professional and technical qualifications in this area.
To give you an understanding of this course, topics include:
- Children’s social, emotional and growth development
- Listening to children
- Understand how to care for young children
- The stages of intellectual and language development of children from birth to eight years
- The role of play in a child’s development

Progression Opportunities
After completing this course, you may choose to progress to work a childcare or nursery assistant, childminder, health play specialist or family support worker.
There is a clear career pathway within the childcare sector that supports learners to grow their skills and move into leadership roles. This typically follows a three-step progression route, beginning at Level 1 and leading all the way to management:
1️⃣ Level 1 – Introduction to working with children
2️⃣ Level 2 Diploma – Supporting the care, learning and development of children
3️⃣ Level 3 Diploma – Working as a fully qualified childcare practitioner
4️⃣ Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Children’s Care, Learning and Development – Management level qualification
Both of these qualifications are delivered via a blended learning approch of online and face-to-face at People 1st with support from experienced childcare tutors who guide you at every step. Completing Level 3 may then lead to the Level 5 Leadership qualification, which prepares you for room leader, deputy manager or childcare manager roles in early years settings.
